State conference focuses on educating homeless children

The 2009 Meeting the Challenge: Educating Homeless Children in Pennsylvania Conference, a statewide conference, will be held October 15th-16th at the Ramada Conference Center in State College.

The one and one-half day professional development event will provide valuable information for homeless liaisons, shelter personnel, educators, pupil services personnel, guidance counselors, social workers and others working with the homeless population.

Conference topics will include the scope of homelessness across the nation and in Pennsylvania; Pennsylvania’s Education for Homeless Youth Basic Education Circular; components of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act; the effective use of school and community resources to remove barriers to learning caused or exacerbated by homeless situations; and programs, services and collaborative strategies to better serve homeless students and their families.

The keynote address will be provided by Liz Murray, whose life story inspired the movie, From Homeless to Harvard.
