Educating Health Professionals To Address The Social Determinants of Health:
Highlights from the Educational Component of the 2016 Institute of Medicine Report
Health starts long before illness – in our homes, schools, and jobs – and these “social determinants of health “account for approximately 75% of health outcomes. It is essential that our students and workforce are prepared to address these determinants.
Please join us for a provocative presentation and discussion with Dr. Laura Magana Valladares and Dean Antonia Villaruel, who both served as members of the National Academy of Medicine committee that developed the report, “A Framework for Educating Health Professionals to Address the Social Determinants of Health” (2016). During this stimulating discussion, you will hear highlights from the report followed by an interactive Q & A.

Laura Magaña Valladares, Ph.D.
Advisers’ Coordinator in the Special Education Department of Mexico State; Educational Consultant for UNICEF; Dean of the School of 10 Education University of the Americas; Executive Director of the Mexican-American Institute of Cultural Affairs; Consultant for the International Educational Programs, Denmark Government; General Academic Coordinator, Anahuac University; Educational Consultant, Easter Seals, Michigan, USA; Dean, School of Education and Human Development, La Salle University.
Dr. Magaña has more than 30 years dedicated to higher education in public and private universities in Mexico; educational organizations in United States; United Nations programs and nongovernmental organizations in Central America and Europe. She has a bachelor’s degree in Education, a master’s degree in Educational Technology, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, and is a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Educating Health Professionals to Address Social Determinants of Health. Her research interest is in learning environments and the use of technology in education. Dr. Magaña is an active member in community educational organizations such as the Mexican Association for the gifted and talented; The International Net for the Education of the deaf person; board member of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oakland University, EUA; Executive board member of Troped; Active member of the International Advisory Committee and President (IAC) of Public Health Global and President of the Capacity Building Committee Global Evaluation and Monitoring Network for Health (GEMNet).
Antonia M. Villarruel, Ph.D., RN, FAAN
Margaret Bond Simon Dean of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and Director of the School’s WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing and Midwifery Leadership
As a bilingual and bicultural researcher, Dr. Villarruel has extensive research and practice experience with Latino populations, health promotion and disparities. Using a community-based participatory approach, she has been the PI/Co-PI of over eight RCTs on reducing high risk behaviors in teens. One program, to reduce sexual risk behavior among Latino youth – entitled Cuídate! is disseminated nationally. Dr. Villarruel holds many leadership positions. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Nursing; serves as Chair of the IOM Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity and the Elimination of Health Disparities and Co-chair of the Strategic Advisory Council of the AARP/RWJ Future of Nursing Campaign for Action. Most recently, Dr. Villarruel was a member of the National Academy of Medicine Committee on Educating Health Professionals to Address the Social Determinants of Health resulting in the report, A Framework for Educating Health Professionals to Address the Social Determinants of Health (2016).
