Captain Planet Foundation Accepting Applications for Ecotech Grants

The Captain Planet Foundation is accepting applications from schools and nonprofit organizations for its Ecotech Grant program, which supports projects that motivate children through the science, technology, engineering, and math fields while challenging them to re-imagine the way their world can be.

The program was created to combat the notion that students needed to choose between “the screen” or “the green” and to encourage educators and students to explore the role technology can play in designing and implementing solutions to some of our most pressing environmental challenges.

To that end, grants of $2,500 will be awarded to schools or nonprofit organizations for projects that use innovation, nature-based design, and/or technology to address an environmental problem in their communities. Ideal projects should integrate environmental education with opportunities for children to solve real-world problems by using science practices and technology. Projects may replicate a successful model or create a new and innovative approach.

Examples of previous ecoTech™ grant-funded projects have involved the integration of robotics and sensors to explore water bodies, collect data, and organize clean-ups; the development of aquaponic and hydroponic systems using arduinos and remote sensing; renewable energy design challenges; biotechnology research; and nature-based design applications.

Preference will be given to applicants who have secured $2,500 in matching funds or in-kind contributions, with priority given to student-directed projects that develop materials that are easy to replicate, including lesson plans, protocols, videos, adaptations, and examples of student work.

To be eligible, applicants must be a school or nonprofit organization based in the United States. Project leaders must be employed at the same school or organization for the duration of the proposed project.

See the Captain Planet website for complete program guidelines, information about last year’s grant recipients, and application instructions.

Deadline: July 15, 2019
