POSITION: Internship with the Community and Economic Development (CED) Department of the Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC). This department builds bridges between low- and moderate-income people and mainstream financial institutions for purposes of community development and individual economic empowerment. Programs include: financial education, foreclosure prevention, employer-assisted housing, promotion of cooperatives and special loan programs for home improvement and small business development.
GOALS: Assist the unit with special projects in financial education, community reinvestment, home-improvement lending, employer-assisted housing and neighborhood economic development.
RESPONSIBILITIES and TASKS: These will include, but not be limited to: assistance with coordinating financial education workshops, development of the Financial Advancement Network (FAN) Clubs, assistance in administering and answering public inquiries about the home improvement loan program, assistance with development of a new financial counseling service, client relations for the employer-assisted housing program, implementation of the foreclosure prevention program, organizing a homeowners’ buyers’ cooperative and data entry.
SKILLS REQUIRED: Intern must have people, communication, organizational and analytical skills. Knowledge about economic development and/or personal financial management, including household budgeting, use of checking accounts, savings strategies and credit management, would be helpful although not required. These skills and knowledge may be further developed on the job. Intern must be able to work with Microsoft Office Suite software programs.
LOCATION OF WORK: CED Department of UAC located on the 5th floor of 1207 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Fall Semester, Winter Semester
TIME REQUIRED: 7-21 hours per week.
COMPENSATION: No monetary compensation but the internship may qualify for degree credits.
VALUE OF THE EXPERIENCE: An internship with the CED Department of the Urban Affairs Coalition includes a range of work and experiences from basic office work to program administration to observation of high level policy and program development meetings. As a result of this internship the Intern will have obtained valuable experiences in the following areas:
• Operations of a nonprofit, multi-purpose agency
• Organizing community-based training programs
• Financial literacy education
• Customer relations
• Bank Community Reinvestment Act compliance
• New program development
• Community economic development
• Employer-assisted housing program development
• Loan program administration
• Database maintenance for a social service agency
SUPERVISOR: Intern will report to Shante Antrom, Interim Director of Community and Economic Development and assigned to work with the Program Managers in the CED Department including David Buckholtz for anti-predatory lending and Audrey Patra, International Fellow, for financial education.
