Dollar General Literacy Foundation Accepting Applications for Adult and Family Literacy Programs

Deadline: March 2, 2007

Since 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation (<a href="http://www.dollargeneral.com/community/dgliteracy.aspx">http://www.dollargeneral.com/community/dgliteracy.aspx</a>) has sought to improve the functional literacy of adults and families by providing grants to nonprofit organizations dedicated to the advancement of literacy. In 2006, the foundation awarded $4.7 million in total grants to 276 nonprofit organizations across the company’s market area.

The foundation’s Adult Literacy Grants Program and the Family Literacy Grants Program are currently accepting applications.

Adult Literacy Grants Program: For fiscal year 2007, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation will award a minimum of $1.5 million in grants through its annual RFP process to qualifying nonprofit adult literacy providers. During the RFP period, the foundation will award grants to direct service providers in the following focus areas only: adult literacy, adult basic education, GED preparation, and English for speakers of other languages.

Family Literacy Grants Program: For fiscal year 2007, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation will award a minimum of $1.5 million in grants through its annual RFP process to qualifying nonprofit family literacy providers. During the RFP, the foundation will award grants to direct family literacy service providers. Family literacy programs applying for funding must have the following four components: adult education instruction (adult basic education, GED preparation, English for speakers of other languages); children’s education; parent and child together time (PACT); and parenting classes that teach parents to be the primary teacher for their child.

The foundation supports nonprofit organizations within Dollar General’s 35-state market area that are established for public use and have active 501(c)(3) status under the Internal Revenue Service Code. To be eligible for consideration, organizations must provide direct literacy-based programs and services to adults or families in the thirty-five states where Dollar General stores are located; be located within twenty miles of a Dollar General store (visit the store locator section of the Dollar General Web site at <a href="http://www.dollargeneral.com">http://www.dollargeneral.com</a>); have not received funding from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for the past two consecutive years; and have met all reporting requirements from previous Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants.

Visit the foundation’s Web page for complete program information and application procedures.
