OVERVIEW:

The primary responsibilities of the Director of Major Gifts and Donor Relations are to oversee all communications to donors, oversee all donor relations (including any operations involved), and manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects.

This position is specifically charged with outreach to and cultivation of potential, new and current donors – with a focus on building and strengthening their relationship with the Project H.O.M.E. community to ensure financial support of the organization.

This position reports to Vice President of Development & Public Relations and is one of the two representatives for Development Department on Senior Management team. The position supervises the Development Associate for Communications and the Manager of Annual Giving and Events.

Communications

Manages Development Associate for Communications.

  • In conjunction with VP, develops comprehensive communications plan and serve as point person for implementation of plan. This includes improving look, purpose and content of Development portions of the printed newsletter, the annual report, the website, the enewsletter, printed materials, etc.
  • Develops new case statements and marketing materials that effectively market the organization’s mission and work and educates the public in terms of issues and maximizes the organization’s fundraising efforts
  • Oversees all development-led communications, to donors or other constituents, including enewsletter, annual report, website, social media, etc.

Donor Relations

  • Plans, implements and manages effective and creative strategies designed to engage new donors at all levels and cultivate larger gifts from already-existing donors.
  • Manages a personal portfolio of approximately 30-40 major gift donors and prospects.
  • Secures personally $1-2 million annually in outright gifts or new commitments.
  • Responsible for $3 million in total fundraising annually.
  • Establishes and manages information tracking processes regarding acknowledgement, recognition, on-going communications and continued cultivation of past and current donors—particularly major donors—to enhance their relationship with the organization.
  • Develops and assesses policies and procedures that are essential for comprehensive donor relations program.
  • Oversees creation and maintenance of segmented lists of donors for events, appeals and invitations.
  • Manages major donor recognition and fundraising events.
  • Responsible for tracking multi-year gifts/pledges and endowment/reserve fund gifts, including liaison to The Philadelphia Foundation for organization’s endowment at the foundation.

Development Operations

  • Oversees Manager of the Annual Fund and Events.
  • Oversees expense tracking for department budget.
  • Oversees development staff training on database and other fundraising skills.
  • Oversees all software/technology for donor acknowledgement and recognition, as well as processes/procedures for prospect management system and donor/prospect/gift reports and analysis.
  • In consultation with VP and Development staff, develops and reviews administrative and departmental policies and procedures and ensures adherence to such policies.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required
  • A minimum of four (4) years progressive development experience
  • Three (3) years management experience and strong leadership skills
  • Prior experience developing and managing budgets
  • Ability to build relationships internally and externally
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously.
