The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has been a visionary not-for-profit organization in the Greater Philadelphia Region since its founding in 1827. PHS organizes the annual Philadelphia International Flower, the world’s largest and longest-running indoor flower show, which brings 270,000 visitors and creates a $61 million economic impact to the city. PHS helps transform lives through revolutionary programs like City Harvest, which has grown and donated 180,000 lbs of fresh produce in six years—helping to feed 1,000 families each week of the growing season. PHS will also help lead the new Plant One Million, an ambitious program to plant one million trees in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Development provides leadership to a recently combined Development and Membership department and develops strategies to diversify and increase the organization’s funding streams to ensure its future sustainability and viability. Reports to the President of PHS.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Creates an overall development strategy and implementation plan for major and planned gifts, capital campaigns, foundation grants, individual giving, membership and fundraising events.
Works collaboratively with the President, Senior and Program Staff, Development Committee and Council to seek and solicit funding opportunities and manage relationships with the organization’s top supporters.
Identifies and participates in the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts prospects. Organizes and oversees a systematic approach to the identification and tracking of major individual prospects.
Ensures all necessary correspondence, reports and proposals to support individual and foundation stewardship is provided; manages reports and actuarial calculations for planned gifts.
With the Grants Manager, oversees the grants management calendar and tracking system.
With the Director of Membership and Manager of Individual Giving, oversees strategies to develop a pipeline and cultivation activities for The 1827 Society, ensure the growth of individual giving, and build the general membership program through direct mail, social media implementation and other marketing tactics.
Develops and oversees all fundraising and cultivation events, including the Preview Party and fall fundraiser.
Staffs the Development Committee and volunteer committees to oversee prospect development.
Hires, manages, and develops a staff of eight people; provides performance management of staff including goal setting and performance standards, and monitoring and measuring performance.
Responsible for the fiscal management of the department, including the development of project plans and budgets on an annual basis. Accountable for achieving financial goals.
