Director of Development, North Light Community Center

Dynamic, multi-service community-based non-profit in Manayunk seeks full-time Director of Development. The Director of Development is responsible for North Light Community Center’s fundraising efforts as a multi-service organization focused on improving the quality of life for children, youth and their families through programs addressing the educational, social, health and well-being of each member of the community. The DD will provide strategic oversight for NLCC fundraising program. The job includes fund development, information management, financial administration and fiscal reporting while implementing fundraising activities for our current programs and new initiatives. The DD reports directly to and works closely with the Executive Director.

Classification: Full-time Salaried (40 hours per week, some evenings and weekends). Starting salary $38,000-$42,000 annually

Development Program
• Plans, directs and implements a comprehensive development program that generates individual donors, foundation, federal, state, city, philanthropic, and corporate support.
• Directs a fund development program that includes the annual fund plan; federal, state and city grants; foundation and corporate gifts; special events and planned giving.
• Oversees and implements strategies that will grow annual revenue, writes proposals and secures funding from federal, state, city, corporate and foundation donors.
• Leads strategies and research to identify, prioritize, cultivate, solicit, recognize and steward all donors and prospects.
• In coordination with the Executive Director, builds and sustains relationships with all stakeholders i.e. current, new and potential grant-giving organizations and individuals.
• Maintains an accurate grants calendar and transmits this information monthly to the Executive Director.
• Manages individual donor campaigns, including special appeals.
• Explores feasibility, plans and implements major and other events to raise funds and friends for organization
• Works to secure progressive and/or socially responsible business partners/sponsors for projects and events.
• In coordination with Executive Director, manages a portfolio of donors and prospects, including major donors and prospects.
• Manages donor database – creates profiles and tracks donors and prospects.
• Develops, markets and implements a planned giving program to ensure long-term financial health.
• Collaborates with staff and consultants to ensure that publications and website include donor-focused content.
• Assists Executive Director in working with the Board of Directors to enhance development efforts.

Board of Directors Relations:
• Works with the Development Committee of the Board of Directors to develop strategies to initiate and meet aggressive fundraising goals.
• Develops fundraising training for Directors and other leadership volunteers.
• Assumes responsibility for all Development reports to the Board and other agencies.
• Assists the Board with recommending and researching potential new members.


  • Works with staff and consultants to ensure strong communications across all program areas to strengthen the organization’s overall effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with staff and consultants to gather stories and statistics that demonstrate the organization’s work of grantees and donors.
  • Along with staff and board, represents the Organization at public events, conferences, workshops and media events.

• Performs general management responsibilities, including annual plans, budgets, reports, and evaluation and oversight of gift tracking systems.
• Prepares annual development plan to corresponding budget outlining revenue and expenses; monitors progress against goals and produces monthly reports. (Grants & Annual Campaign ONLY)
• Works as an effective and proactive team player.

• Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.
• Minimum three years of experience in charitable fund development.
• Strong knowledge of principles, ethics and practices of successful fundraising.
• Knowledge of local and national philanthropic communities.
• Computer literacy and competency with office technology and electronic donor tracking systems, preferably Donor Perfect.
• Understanding and commitment to North Light’s mission and role in the community.
• Ability to present, inform and motivate individuals and groups about the NLCC’s mission and philanthropy.
• Demonstrated success in securing major and annual gifts from foundations and corporations.
• Demonstrated success in meeting annual fund goals, development management, grantwriting, sponsorships and special events.
• Demonstrated success in soliciting and securing major gifts from individuals.
• Thorough, organized and detail-oriented approach to work.
• Ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and manage own work.
• Ability to lead multiple long and short-term projects simultaneously, meeting all related deadlines.
• Ability to take direction but also make decisions and solve problems independently, effectively and creatively as appropriate.
• Willingness to work as a team member to accomplish overarching organizational goals.
• Excellent written/oral communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills to effectively work with diverse individuals (colleagues, board members, volunteers and donors), both one-to-one as well as in groups.
• Ability to be flexible & creative in responding to new challenges.
• Willingness to work as a team member to accomplish overarching organizational goals.
• Ability to manage and share pertinent information with staff and board.
• Goal-oriented, persistent and persuasive in the contact, follow-through and completion of acquiring donor gifts.
• Understands the confidential nature of fundraising efforts and donor information, and maintains confidences.
• Ability to lift a minimum of 30 lbs.


Beginning Salary is $40,000 annually. Benefits for salaried employees include:
• Medical Insurance is available to employees on a 40% co-pay basis (North Light covers 60% of premium).
• North Light Community Center pays 100% of the cost of Long Term Disability & Group Life Insurance Policies and makes a quarterly employer contribution to a Defined Contribution Retirement Plan.
• Two-Four Weeks paid vacation and the Center is closed for 18 paid holidays.
