An Independent Elementary School in North Central Philadelphia
Position: We seek a Director of Development to begin in summer 2011.
Founded in 2006 by Germantown Academy and Project H.O.M.E., Community Partnership School is a Pre-K through 5th grade independent elementary school located in North Central Philadelphia. Community Partnership School works tirelessly toward its ambitious vision: to meet talent with opportunity by providing children from a low-wealth community with the same quality education offered in the region’s best private schools, supporting and engaging families in the process, and striving to transform lives and strengthen our community.
Position Overview:
The Director of Development has primary responsibility for raising more than $1,500,000 annually from individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Director manages and implements all fundraising activity, including cultivation, stewardship and events, and is responsible for the development of marketing strategies and publications to increase the organization’s visibility with potential funders throughout the Philadelphia region and beyond.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Administrative
• Report regularly (weekly) to the Head of School and collaborate with the Board Development Chair on all aspects of the development program.
• Generate, maintain, and periodically reassess a development strategic plan.
• Supervise staff training, development and annual performance review for Associate Director of Development.
• Provide timely monthly development reports and other reports for the Board of Trustees and Development Committee.
• Actively participate as a member of the administrative team, which includes the Head of School, Director of Academic Programs, Director of Enrollment, and Director of After School Programs.
• Works with in-house finance coordinator to reconcile donations, prepare financial reports, and manage pledges and department budget.
Major Gift Work
• Work with Board of Trustees, Development Committee and Head of School to identify, cultivate and coordinate the solicitation of major gifts ($15,000+).
• Work closely with the Property and Sustainability Committee to develop strategies to identify alternative and long-term fundraising streams.
• Manage relationships with approximately 50 major gift prospects by cultivating, soliciting and stewarding these contacts as appropriate.
• Participate in all aspects of the major gift cycle:
– Initiate contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors.
– Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers.
– Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
– Make solicitations when appropriate.
– Maintain stewardship contacts with donors; adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate empathetic disposition and perseverance; reflect optimistic and positive attitude; and convey sensitivity to needs of the donors.
Campaign Planning & Execution
• Prepare plan to execute the School’s first capital campaign that will meet the School’s strategic program and facility plan
• Serve as Capital Campaign Director, working closely with a consulting firm and the capital campaign chairs for the duration of the campaign
Other
• Manage foundation relations, proposal development, interim and final reporting.
• Oversee production of annual report, direct mail pieces, and website materials.
• Work with event chairs to plan and execute annual spring fundraising event and other cultivation events throughout the year.
• Provide the Board and Development Committee with professional development opportunities and training on cultivation and solicitation techniques.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Eight or more years of relevant fundraising experience for non-profit organizations preferred
• Proven record of increasing revenue portfolio(s) of mid-size nonprofit(s) (annual operating budget of $1 million or more) through fundraising
• Experience with major gifts or direct donor solicitation
• Ability to work closely with others and manage multiple donor relationships, and have a proven background in annual, capital and campaign fundraising
• Knowledge of the grant application processes and experience writing foundation proposals
• Ability to handle multiple priorities with a strategic focus
• Ability to train and direct staff and volunteers in soliciting gifts of various levels
• Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of people, and self confidence to outreach to all levels of external audiences
• Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs
• A proven commitment to working in a diverse, multicultural setting.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
