Organizational Overview:

Bethesda Project serves Philadelphia’s homeless and formerly homeless men and women through its network of fifteen residential and shelter settings. In the past year, more than 7200 homeless adults received housing, shelter, meals, and supportive services as they sought to manage their physical and mental illness, recover from addiction, and reclaim their dignity, self-worth and independence. Position Overview:

Bethesda Project is currently seeking a creative, driven, and dynamic Director of Development to lead our fundraising efforts. The Director of Development will design and implement development initiatives targeting a variety of sources, including foundations, corporations, individuals, religious organizations, government, and special events, toward a $1.1 million annual goal. Reporting to the Executive Director, he or she will ensure that fundraising strategies align with the strategic plan and are designed to sustain Bethesda Project’s mission in the short-term and long-term. The Director of Development will manage a team of two staff and work closely with the Board of Directors, Development Committee, and senior management team.

Reports to: Executive Director.

Responsibilities include:

Develop, implement, and evaluate strategic giving programs to maintain Bethesda Project’s current benefactors and donors as well as extend opportunities to new supporters.
Develop an annual fundraising calendar that includes financial goals and sources, United Way campaign strategies, newsletter schedule, appeals schedule, special events calendar, foundation and trusts proposal and submission plan, and other income-producing efforts.
Research, organize, and prepare high-quality proposals to foundations, trusts, and organizations that are interested in supporting our work. Review all incoming requests for proposals. Advise and assist staff in articulating the needs of the poor to benefactors and the larger public.
Produce all stewardship reports for grants received.
Identify prospective contributors, cultivate strong individual donor relationships, and steward all partnerships with supporters.
Design and coordinate internal efforts for all special events, including small donor events and major annual charity auction.
Lead and supervise a team of two Development staff in the execution of proposals, reports, and the annual appeal; the planning of fundraising events; and the effective management of donor communications and public relations.
Utilize Raiser’s Edge to maintain a comprehensive donor database. Manage contributions, cull reports, and oversee the gift acknowledgement process.
Function as chief staff liaison to the Development Committee, providing monthly reports on donations and contributions, updates on current development appeals and initiatives, and periodic review of communication strategies, including monthly newsletters and the annual report.
Function as chief staff liaison for any Capital Campaign or Endowment Campaign which the Board of Directors might authorize.
Ability to interact with and maintain relationships among various religious groups.
Report regularly to and works closely with the Executive Director.

Skill/Educational Requirements:

Masters’ Degree preferred.
Minimum of four years’ experience in the development field, preferably with closely-related populations. Previous experience in management and supervision required.
Proven track record of successful fundraising.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Ability to articulate Bethesda Project’s mission with energy, passion, and commitment.
Ability to work effectively with others in a supervisory capacity with intelligence, grace and wisdom.
Computer literacy, including proficient utilization of Raiser’s Edge preferred.
