Director of College Readiness, Mastery Charter Schools
Posted by Mastery Charter Schools on October 16, 2017
Mastery Charter Schools is a non-profit network of 22 schools serving 13,000 students in Philadelphia and Camden. Sixteen of our schools are turnarounds of previously struggling district neighborhood schools and charter schools. Mastery is the largest turnaround school operator in the nation and has been lauded by President Obama and the US Department of Education for our ability to dramatically boost academic achievement in historically low-performing schools.
Mastery schools are organized around a common vision: “Mastery schools are joyful, authentic communities where students learn how to think critically and act independently so they are truly prepared for post-secondary success.” Mastery’s work is rooted in an unwavering belief that their students can achieve at the highest levels. To fulfill this vision, Mastery recognizes that it must attend to the whole child – Mastery values personal as well as academic skills, and schools match their high expectations for students with high levels of support.

Position Summary
Mastery seeks an exceptional leader to serve as our network Director of College Readiness. The Director is responsible for building systems to ensure our campus-based staff effectively advise, guide, and place our students in the appropriate 4-year, 2 -year, technical, trade, service, or work placements. Ultimately, the goal of the Director of College Readiness is to ensure our students are placed and persist through graduation at chosen post-secondary educational or work placements. The dominant focus of the Director of College Readiness is to direct and support college advising program implementation at Mastery’s seven secondary campuses. The Director of College Readiness will work directly with school-based leaders and post-secondary staff to build and sustain highly effective college and career readiness programming across 11th and 12th grades.
Mastery is a national leader in effective college and career placement programming in low-income urban schools. We are proud that Mastery students graduate college at 3x their peer averages. Our College and Career program has been refined over 10 years and has supported over 4,000 Mastery graduates and presently serves 2,500 students across the network. We maintain a highly skilled and functioning team and believe it is our responsibility to connect students to post-secondary success.
The Post-secondary Program leverages a bi-weekly seminar, exposure programming and strong advising to support students in finding the right and appropriate post-secondary path. Programming highlights include:
- 16-week Internship Experience in 10th or 11th grade
- Advising program informed by historical student data and current post-secondary landscape
- Heavy focus on post-secondary fit, with a significant emphasis on affordability
- Network-wide events, including our annual College Fair and Affinity Partnership Events
This position is a fantastic opportunity for an extraordinary leader – the opportunity to create a best-in-class public school post-secondary placement system that aligns to a variety of post-secondary options, not simply college. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a relentless commitment to excellence and will share a deep belief in Mastery’s mission. The right candidate will have a track record of program development, experience managing programming at scale, and knowledge of the post-secondary access to success pipeline.
