We have an excellent opportunity for Major & Special Gifts (fundraising) professionals to join our team as Development Officer of Major & Special Gifts in the Resource Development Department. The ideal individual will be responsible for securing revenue to support UWSEPA’s community impact mission. The Development Officer of Major & Special Gifts manages annual solicitation, cultivation, and customer service of Foundations, similar funders, and direct mail donors.
Essential Function
• Manage annual solicitation, cultivation, and customer service of Foundations, similar funders, and direct mail donors.
• Write proposals, letters of intent, reports, special requests, and other communications for funders.
• Work with Community Impact, and Civic and Corporate Engagement, staff to get information necessary for proposals, reports, and other communications with funders.
• Ensure the accurate stewardship of gifts as received through appropriate internal handling and tracking of cultivation.
• Ensure the efficient and accurate entry of foundation and special asks giving data in Andar/360 and the generation of accurate and timely reports to measure the progress of Foundations proposals and special asks.
Money/Funding – Work with staff in Resource Development, and/or Community Impact, and/or Finance to create budgets for grant proposals, and to report on budgeted activities.
Relationships, both Internal and External – This position deals with all levels of internal and external staff, including cultivation of major donors, foundations, volunteers, the CEO and Direct Reports.
Accountability – This position is accountable to deliver on goals for funds raised in foundations, government grants, similar funders, and direct mail donors, as well as tracking, reporting, customer service and data management in the Major gifts area.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Type and Level of Education – Qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree; two (2) to four (4) years successful relationship management experience required (development/fundraising or sales); United Way fundraising experience desirable.
Technical or other skills – Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, analytical, skills related to trend analysis, planning and strategy. Strong project management skills. MS Office, Power Point, and database management skills.
Experience – At least three (3) years experience with overall fundraising experience with a major institution with emphasis in grant writing and reporting.
Specific Skills & Attitudes Required for Success in Position – Communication skills (with supervisors, internal/external customers), project management skills, critical thinking skills (esp. decision making skills). A self-motivator who is detail oriented with the ability to work in a fast paced environment in a team effort. Manage time to get proposals and reports completed in time for organizational review and for final submission before deadlines.
The successful candidate will possess superior relationship management skills; cultivation & stewardship of individual relationships; exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to network and strong oral and written communication skills; he/she is a compelling public speaker/presenter with demonstrated ability to secure gifts/close sales and achieve goals. He/she must possess excellent critical thinking and analysis skills; have the ability to analyze and interpret data and the ability to produce results independently, by persuading/motivating others. The ideal candidates possess outstanding organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and have effective problem-solving skills. He/she will have access to personal transportation (car) and must be available to attend some early morning or evening events; minimal weekend events.

Physical/Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit for long periods of time to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices and objects. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, speak, see and hear. The employee occasionally is required to stand, walk and lift objects and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee may often lead/participate in training sessions, presentations and meetings. Frequent travel/driving may be required to meet with clients, stakeholders, constituents and agencies. The employee will often need to function in a high-pressure environment and meet stringent deadlines, and perform complex tasks.
