Job description
Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia, a non-profit 501 (c)(3), is a six-year academic enrichment program with a unique dual mission to: build a path from middle school to college for disadvantaged students from Philadelphia and Camden, and inspire talented college students toward education careers. Breakthrough provides rigorous academic enrichment and college preparation for students from 7th through 12th grades through summer and school year programming; it also provides high school and college admissions support and counseling. College and high school students from around the country serve as teacher interns in Breakthrough’s classrooms. Breakthrough emphasizes academic excellence,family involvement, leadership, teamwork, creativity, and diversity. Breakthrough is an affiliate of the national Breakthrough Collaborative. POSITION OVERVIEW The focus of the Development Director position is on the development and execution of strategies to diversify and strengthen the organization’s funding streams to ensure its future sustainability. This includes grant seeking, writing and reporting, event execution, database (Salesforce) management, donor cultivation and communications. This individual will report directly to the Executive Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Organize Breakthrough’s two major annual events held in October and May
  • Coordinate Visiting Hour events for donors and prospects
  • Schedule and coordinate site visits with foundations
  • Manage a calendar of grant report and proposal dates; track an active portfolio of pending and committed grants annually
  • Write grant proposals and accompanying grant reports
  • Steward/manage relationships with foundation contacts
  • Create development materials for events, donors, etc. as necessary
  • Write thank you letters; acknowledge all gifts
  • Develop and manage communications – e-newsletters, facebook, annual report, appeal letters
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director on development strategies and targeting prospects
  • Develop and maintain individual donor files/records
  • Write proposals to individual donors as required
  • Manage the year-end annual solicitation
  • Coordinate Development Committee meetings in collaboration with Development Comm. Chair
  • Develop stewardship program
  • Implement a re-engagement strategy for lapsed donors
  • Assist in the development of strategies to engage alumni students and teachers
