Development and Communications Manager, Mt Airy USA

Mt. Airy USA is a non-profit community development corporation that works to improve and advance the Mt. Airy neighborhood. Mt. Airy USA works towards its mission through four program areas: 1) Commercial Corridor Revitalization and Business Support; 2) Real Estate Development; 3) Housing Counseling and Financial Literacy; 4) The Mt. Airy Schools Coalition. Mt. Airy USA seeks to advance its fundraising and communications capabilities by creating a new position dedicated to these functions. In addition to the specific responsibilities listed below, the person in this role will also be expected to work closely with Mt. Airy USA senior staff to develop and lead the organization’s overarching Development and Communications strategy.

Development Responsibilities:

 Donor Database: Manage Mt. Airy USA’s donor database. Use data to identify prospects and increase the effectiveness of Mt. Airy USA’s fundraising campaigns.
 Event Planning: Manage Mt. Airy USA’s annual “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” fundraiser, which raises revenue through sponsorships, ticket sales, and a live and silent auction. Coordinate donor cultivation events such as periodic “friendraisers” and site visits to Mt. Airy USA projects. May also assist Commercial Corridor Department with event coordination as needed.
 Appeals: Coordinate Mt. Airy USA’s annual winter appeal and spring appeal mailings.
 Grant Management: Track Mt. Airy USA’s grant reporting requirements and complete reports as needed.
 Grant Applications: Research and identify new potential grant sources for Mt. Airy USA. Work with program staff to complete grant applications as needed.
 Board Development: Work with Mt. Airy USA’s Board of Directors to create a Development Committee.

Communications Responsibilities:

 GoMtAiry.com: Update and maintain content on http://gomtairy.com.
 E-newsletter: Produce the Go Mt. Airy Explorer, a monthly e-newsletter publication listing member events, sales and specials as well as other community activities. Re-instate a quarterly Mt. Airy USA newsletter with organizational updates.
 Social Media: Manage Go Mt. Airy’s use of social media to promote local businesses. Grow Mt. Airy USA’s presence on social media following to increase awareness of the organization’s work.
 Press: Coordinate press events: manage event logistics and prepare and distribute press releases.

Qualifications:

 Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills are required. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong writing skills with the ability to write for varied purposes, such as marketing and grant-writing, and varied platforms, such as social media, e-newsletters, and web.
 Strong applicants will also demonstrate exemplary organizational skills, including attention to detail, the ability to plan ahead, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
 Event management experience is strongly preferred.
