JOB DESCRIPTION

General Position Description
HIAS Pennsylvania seeks a Deputy Director (DD) to oversee programs, operations, financial management, human resources and development in this 20+-person nonprofit organization.  The candidate should be an independent and self-directed leader who is focused on executing the strategic vision and mission of HIAS Pennsylvania.  The ideal candidate has the ability to develop strong relationships and partnerships with peers at corporations, foundations and nonprofit organizations, as well as HIAS Pennsylvania’s Board members and collaborative partners.

This position is second in command to the Executive Director (ED) and the DD will act on the ED’s behalf as needed, both externally and internally.  The DD will be part of the HIAS Pennsylvania management team and oversee a team of professionals including the Office Manager, a financial consultant, and the Development and Communications Coordinator.

Primary Responsibilities:

Internal Operations (40%)

Human Resources
The DD will be responsible for reviewing all aspects of human resources, to ensure consistency in hiring, salary structure and personnel policies.  S/he will work with the ED and Office Manager to ensure that all information about employees is up-to-date and that systems are in place for proper maintenance of personnel files.

Internal Operations
The DD, with the ED and relevant program managers, will review all documents and files, to  ensure consistency and proper organization of information.

Financial
Working with the ED, the Office Manager and the financial consultant, the DD will ensure that all monthly reports are accurate and oversee billing of government grants to ensure consistency and accountability.

Development/External Relationships (40%)

Major Donors/Contributors
The DD will work closely with the HIAS PA Board, the ED, and the Development and Communications Coordinator (DCC) to expand, modify and implement the development plan outlined in HIAS Pennsylvania’s strategic plan.   Based on this plan, the DD will have primary responsibility for identifying and cultivating major donors and stakeholders to achieve our increased fundraising goals.

Foundations and Corporate Giving
With the ED and the DCC, the DD will identify and cultivate new sources of funding from foundations, corporations and other institutional donors. The DD, with the DCC, will devise a system of grant tracking and reporting to ensure appropriate data collection, timely reporting
and accountability.

External Relationships
The DD will reach out to stakeholders in government, corporations, media and other sectors of the community to promote the programs of HIAS PA and increase the agency’s visibility.  The DD will represent HIAS PA at events and meetings.

Program (20%)

Implementing Organizational Priorities
With the management team, the DD will ensure that current activities of the organization adhere to its strategic plan, and oversee the implementation of new programs or approaches.

Qualifications:

The candidate should be passionate about HIAS PA’s mission, understand the organization’s roots in and relationship to the Jewish community, and have a demonstrated ability to work with diverse collaborators and stakeholders. In addition, the candidate should possess:
•    Strong strategic-thinking and analytical ability
•    Ability to create and modulate sustainable systems in a dynamic organization
•    Highly-developed organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt quickly to changing situations
•    Stellar oral and written communication skills
•    Effective collaborative and shared-leadership skills
•    Ability to work with and positively engage diverse staff and stakeholders
•    Excellent attention to detail
•    Exceptional work ethic and a “do whatever it takes to accomplish the job” attitude
Educational/Experiential Requirements:
•    Masters degree or equivalent, such as MSW, JD or MBA
•    4 or more years working in a nonprofit or equivalent, including 2 or more years in a supervisory or management position
•    High level of computer literacy, including knowledge of social networking, database maintenance and spread sheets
•    Priority will be given to candidates who have familiarity with the legal and social service needs of immigrants and refugees.
