Dash for Democracy
Giving your voice legs!
Join the hundreds that have already registered for the Committee of Seventy’s inaugural Dash for Democracy? 5K Run/Walk that will take place on Independence Mall in Philadelphia on Saturday, November 4, 2006 ?just three days before an election that includes the hottest race in the nation.
The Dash, organized by Boston Marathon Race Director, Dave McGillivray, is not your ordinary 5K, but rather a platform for you to ?run? or walk for issues that are important to you! To have as much fun as possible, we are holding a “Creative Expressions Contest” with prizes to reward the most innovative and entertaining ways of expressing your issues, passions or beliefs.
The Dash, which is a USATF-certified course, is a completely unique concept as this is the first time a run/walk is being used as a vehicle to promote democracy. There couldn’t be a more perfect place for this event than the city of Philadelphia ? the birthplace of American democracy. The race route is worth highlighting as it also is a first – the Dash starts in front of the National Constitution Center, takes you up Market Street around City Hall, out to Logan Circle and back. Imagine ? thousands of people running and walking through the heart of the city dressed in ways to draw attention to their issue!
The spirit of the Dash is to build is to build a more energized and active democracy ? something that benefits us all. Online registration and complete information are available at http://www.dashfordemocracy.org.
Other activities happening at the Dash include a ?Democracy Your Way? Expo inside the National Constitution Center from 7 a.m. until noon that will showcase 30+ area nonprofits with information on how to get involved in your community. There will also be a Mini-Dash for the kids, music, raffle tickets, speakers and much more.
All the revenue generated from the Dash will help support the Committee of Seventy?s non-partisan civic education and empowerment programs.
