ABOUT THE EVENT
MYX: Multicultural Youth eXchange, in collaboration with Songhai Press Corporation and Soul School, presents a free open-mic reception celebrating artwork created by youth from four regions of Philadelphia in an art exhibition entitled, CULTURAL IMPRINTS.
CULTURAL IMPRINTS explores what elements in Philadelphia’s environment have left an indelible “imprint” on Philadelphia’s cultural identity or “character.” Inspired by a MYX youth artist exchange program which took place in Iceland in 2002, this project asks “what are the elements in Philadelphia’s landscape that makes us uniquely Philadelphian?”
High school students from Horace Howard Furness High School (south), Taller Puertorrique?o/Edison High School (north), Robert E. Lamberton High School (west) and Franklin Learning Center (central) used various printmaking techniques to express how they view their surroundings and neighborhoods.
The open-mic reception will feature:
*Performances from SOUL SCHOOL
*Youth poetry
*Break dancing moves by OVERDOSE – a Philly youth b-boy/girl dance group
*Beats and rhymes by local artists
*Turntablism by DJ BROTHER JAMAR & DJ PHSH
CULTURAL IMPRINTS runs from April 7 to May 30, 2006 at the MYX Gallery.
Project funded by the Five County Arts Fund
