Creative Entrepreneurship and Education in Cultural Life, by the Arts, Entertainment and Media Management Department and the Arts Entrepreneurship Center of Columbia College Chicago, Chicago, Ill., July 15-18, 2009.

Creative entrepreneurship as an area of academic study is just beginning to establish roots in academia. Little is known about the process of creative entrepreneurship and why some entrepreneurs succeed while others do not. Research and education in creative entrepreneurship are in the early stages. Also, there is some question as to what extent entrepreneurship can be taught. At the same time, it has become evident that creative entrepreneurship, particularly in the US, is one of the keys to economic growth and creation of new jobs in the creative sector. At art schools and universities, many are starting to believe that traditional art curricula should include an entrepreneurship component. If young artists and creative professionals added to the skills and knowledge they already receive, the ability to think like an entrepreneur, and some basic entrepreneurial tools, their chances of achieving and sustaining financial viability and artistic success would greatly increase.
