Coordinator, Cross City Schools Campaign

Overall

The Coordinator’s role is to support the work of member groups; help develop a collective focus; help coordinate joint campaigns on school reform issues; and amplify organizing groups’ resources and power. The position is for 20 hours a week, allowing a flexible schedule except for scheduled meetings (which may sometimes happen outside of normal business hours due to the need to involve parents and students). Qualifications

The ideal candidate has experience in community organizing, as well as a strong interest in public education. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are important. Knowledge of Philadelphia public schools is a plus. Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required. Salary is commensurate with experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Coordination/Facilitation

Coordinate monthly (and other) meetings:

develop and circulate the agenda
facilitate the meeting (keeping it focused; ensuring all voices are heard)

Help members develop and maintain effective processes for working together:

bring issues/questions to the surface and facilitate discussion of them
help groups talk with each other, share info, make connections, support each other
ensure that decision making is inclusive and fair

Facilitate participation by students and parents in key discussions and activities (as deemed appropriate by the organizing groups).

Facilitate periodic assessment process to revisit goals and assess progress and processes

Help members develop and maintain joint campaigns on issues of common priority:

coordinate planning meetings to develop campaign priorities and strategy
facilitate development of joint platforms, documents, and materials
coordinate events, including meetings with District officials and outside organizations

Strategy Development and Project Management

Help the groups develop and pursue effective school reform strategies

identify common goals and areas of work
explore other opportunities for convergence
develop strategies and identify specific tasks and responsibilities
think more deeply and broadly about where are and where we’re going

When the coalition sets a course, keep the focus on that course

Provide project management

continually identify next steps and time line
document major decisions/directions, so that work can proceed from there
complete/coordinate tasks identified
make sure that things move along in a timely way toward fruition

Resources and Relationships

Identify and create resources to support members’ work

do research to identify materials and data that will further the work

Coordinate work with the Education First Compact

Help connect the groups with other school reform actors and build new relationships

identify potential new people/organizations
help develop/expand relationships, as directed by the board

With the member groups, raise funds for Cross City activities, and cultivate relationships with foundations.
