COOL Conference

Posted by on February 20, 2004

Just wanted to send a brief reminder to register TODAY for the 20th Annual COOL Idealist National Conference at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, March 12-14, 2004.

Makings of an amazing conference are in the works. Highlights include expanded offerings for campus administrators, year of service programs and their members, and on topics like fair trade and global equity, socially responsible careers, international youth service and civil society development, and voting. As always, we will feature more than 150 workshops, spread over 5 blocks on Saturday and Sunday, and about a dozen incredible Friday Forums. Forum topics, in addition to those listed above, will include hunger and homelessness, service and civics, alternative spring breaks, environmental action, and learning lessons from social movements.

Keynote speakers will include:

Cheryl Dorsey, President of Echoing Green Foundation, whose track record includes founding and running Family Van, a community-based mobile health unit that provides basic medical and outreach services to at-risk residents of inner-city Boston neighborhoods, serving as a White House Fellow and Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Labor, and leading Danya International, Inc., as the Director of Public Health Initiatives. (See http://www.echoinggreen.org/ for more info.)

Claudia Horwitz, Founder and director of stone circles, an organization that helps individuals and organizations integrate faith, spiritual practice, and reflection into their work for social change. Claudia brings more than 13 years with community-based initiatives, nonprofit organizations, and youth leadership programs, including COOL and Empty the Shelters in Philadelphia. She has recently published her first book, A Stone’s Throw: living the act of faith, (stone circles, 1999; Viking Penguin, 2002) is a practical guide to individual and social transformation through spirit and faith.
