SOCHE and Ohio Campus Compact are pleased to co-present a conference on The Scholarship and Practice of Engagement. The perspectives on community engagement in higher education will range from long-time scholar Gene Rice to more recent, new generation, practitioner work of David Maurrasse and Byron White. Under the direction of these renowned scholar-practitioners, the conference will provide a foundational understanding of engagement as well as explore critical issues and directions of community engagement in higher education, which include:
• institutionalizing the scholarship of engagement beyond service learning
• utilizing the community partner as the locus build a scholarship of engagement program
• asset-based community development from a higher education perspective in times of the rhetoric of deficiency
Additionally, the conference will include student/faculty research presentations that are explicitly community-based. Participants will present their papers and receive feedback from a panel of discussants.
This conference offers an opportunity for higher education and community partners to deepen their understanding of the current field of community engagement, as well as contribute to a dialog that will set the tone for a community engagement agenda for Ohio.
Registration Fee: $100. Please contact SOCHE about community partner and a student rate ($35) for this conference.
Who should attend: all interested academic leaders and faculty from private and public institutions of higher education, as well as all interested community organization leaders and staff, especially those that have partnered with higher education.
The SOCHE Promise: We promise to provide valuable professional development experiences in which you leave a SOCHE conference more knowledgeable, better connected to your colleagues, professionally re-charged, and ready to enhance student learning.
