Community Weaving is a civic engagement project of the Family Support Network, International, that was started by a welfare mother struggling to make ends meet in 1993. As a way to create a support system for her family, Cheryl Honey, gathered her neighbors together and they committed to care and share resources with one another.

Over the years, Community Weaving emerged into an Asset-Based Community Development approach that schools, churches, workplaces, organizations and neighborhoods use to empower families to share resources and create their own Family Support Networks. In 2005, Max Stalnaker, a VolunteerMatch volunteer, teamed up with Cheryl to develop a web-based social networking tool on the http://www.familynetwork.org website to make it easy for people to:

* pool human and tangible resources;
* post educational, social and recreational activities;
* organize community service projects;
* share great ideas
* create Village Resource Directories
* generate reports

It’s free for anyone to use. The only thing we ask of those using the technology, is that they be a Good Neighbor and lend a helping hand every now and again. This generates human kindness, an abundance of grassroots resources, reduces consumption and creates safe and thriving communities. Professionals and agencies partner with the effort by sharing knowledge and skills and in return tap the Resource Treasury to empower those they serve. Community Weaving was showcased at the Grassroots and Groundwork conference in 2006, as a poverty reduction model. The Center for Effective Collaboration and Practice recognized the FSN as a promising practice. http://cecp.air.org/teams/prospectors/bothell_washington_individualized.asp
