In a time of scarce resources, it is important to understand how leaders around the country, in statehouses and city agencies, school districts and communities, are maximizing their resources. A recent report by the Coalition for Community Schools, Financing Community Schools: Leveraging Resources to Support Student Success, highlights several communities that have figured out how to do more with less. The report finds that diversified funding in community schools leverages district dollars 3:1.

The Coalition invites you to participate in a webinar to learn how two community school initiatives (Evansville, IN and Multnomah County, OR) are successfully leveraging resources – both public and private, to support and improve outcomes for students and their families. These presenters will discuss how through their partnership, they have been able to align, integrate, and leverage resources to finance their community schools work, as well as the benefits of this strategy in transforming their schools.
Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation partners with over 70 community agencies to support the academic, social emotional, and health needs of students and families. In Multnomah County, OR, SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) Service System aligns over $45 million in resources from school districts, the city, County, and state organizations to deliver academic support, enrichment, youth development, health, and other services to students, families, and members of the community to increase academic success and family self-sufficiency.

Youth Engagement in Community Schools: Promising Practices from the National Beacons Initiative (February 24, 2011)
The Beacons are a community school model that spans four cities and serves over 200,000 youth and adults annually. The strong emphasis on youth engagement as key for youth and community development is the foundation for many common, national strategies. Such strategies include youth leadership and employment programs, intergenerational and inter-cultural community building and social group work. This webinar focuses on the ways in which youth are engaged as partners with adults in Beacons to improve themselves, programs and communities. Intermediaries, direct service staff and young people from Beacon initiatives in New York City, Minneapolis and San Francisco will share promising practices derived from their work.
