Community Education & Engagement Specialist, Project H.O.M.E.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Position Overview:  This position is a community mobilizer who will work with the Advocacy and Public Policy Department to strategically involve residents, alumni, people who are or were homeless, and other members of the community to further the mission of Project HOME related to advocacy and community education.

Coordinate leadership development and training among residents, alumni, and other consumers

Interact with residential and alumni programs on leadership/skill development and election participation

Work with the Special Projects Coordinator on Speakers Bureau activities, with an emphasis on supporting speakers and administering the program

Coordinate advocacy volunteers and interns

Participate in the overall strategic planning of the organization and the Advocacy and Public Policy Department; assist with campaign development; plan and organize actions

Work with the Director of  Advocacy and Public Policy  to support and implement the Vote for Homes Coalition:

Mobilize the Project HOME community and partners to participate and vote

Build and support voting-related coalition work, including meeting PA Voice objectives and other coalition tasks

Conduct voter registration events and run phone banks

Manage volunteers

Coordinate and facilitate trainings

Take notes, convene meetings, keep everyone on task and internally accountable

Support data entry and management

Help organize, plan, and facilitate organizational meetings and public events including::

Advocacy Committee

Speakers Bureau

Homeless Memorial Day

Training and Skill-building related to Advocacy and Speakers Bureau

Measure, evaluate, track, and enhance involvement of residents and alumni in Advocacy activities

Engage other organizational partners’ staff and participants through coalition building and relationships

Support department efforts to include data in appropriate databases for organizing and communication purposes.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

High levels of language and math literacy required.

High School Diploma required, college helpful

Will consider range of backgrounds and experience.

Training in Wellness Self-Management and/ or WRAP a plus.

DBH-certified peer specialists encouraged to apply.

EXPERIENCE AND JOB-RELATED REQUIREMENTS:

Experience managing volunteers and planning decision-making for diverse groups

Familiarity with housing and behavioral health systems in Philadelphia recommended

Familiarity with issues, especially housing, which impact low-income individuals

Commitment to social justice for the poor

Available to attend evening and weekend meetings

Excellent listening, speaking, and writing skills

Knowledge of Philadelphia City government and politics

Ability to work as a member of a team and independently

Strong communication and organizational skills

Ability to represent the agency and coalition in the community

Knowledge of Microsoft Office and general computing

Valid Driver’s license strongly preferred, must be able to travel via public transportation within Philadelphia

Commitment to recovery, choice, empowerment, and the ability of people with serious mental illness or co-occurring disorders to find meaningful lives in the community; ability to establish trusting relationships

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Minimal, but must be able travel around the city and state during voter engagement events and speaking engagements; light lifting required.

WORKING HOURS:

Total:  20 hours/week.  Mostly 9-5, with occasional evening and weekend commitments.
