New Grants Program support Community College Service-Learning – Deadline: November 3
Fifteen community colleges will be selected in a national competition to participate in the next round of AACC?s Horizons project.
The Corporation for National and Community Service recently announced a three-year grant to AACC to build and strengthen the infrastructure for service learning program development at community colleges nationwide. The fourth AACC grant through the Learn and Serve America program since 1994, this award enables the association to offer competitive service learning grants to its member colleges. Features of the grant include:
* $12,000 grants, plus extensive training and technical assistance, to 10 colleges developing model service learning programs in education, public safety, environment, homeland security, and human needs (preference will be given to colleges new to service learning);
* $5,000 grants to five colleges experienced in service learning, to mentor the 10 institutions described above;
* $2,000 grants to four colleges organizing and hosting service learning and civic responsibility workshops for other institutions in their regions;
* on-site training and consulting for colleges needing assistance with curricular integration and program development;
* information dissemination at conference and workshop presentations;
* an enhanced service learning Web site, plus online and print publications, via AACC?s Service Learning Clearinghouse;
* research on the effects of service learning on student civic engagement; and
* annual summits for chief academic officers from previous and newly selected AACC Horizons grantee colleges to assess service learning program institutionalization.
Requests for proposals for the new college mentor and mentee grants will be posted online by late September, with an expected deadline of Monday, November 3, 2003. New college grants will begin January 1, 2004. Applications for the four regional service learning and civic responsibility workshop mini-grants will be posted online in January 2004.
