Community Advocacy Award

American Educational Research Association (AERA) Critical Educators for Social Justice (CESJ) Special Interest Group Community Advocacy Award

This award recognizes a community advocate who has made distinguished contributions in community activism focused on issues of social justice to improve the educational conditions of students, families and/or communities. Nominees do not need to be members of AERA.

Nomination Materials

Nominations must include electronic materials of the following to the committee chair  (Paula Carbone) by January 25, 2011:

1.  A brief description of the nominee’s work related to community advocacy and why the nominee is qualified. Because community advocacy can be broadly conceptualized, we accept work related to educational issues that range from political action, service, specific policy intervention (institutional and/or community), programs supporting tolerance for marginalized groups (GLBT, gang members, etc.), and any other advocacy work that directly benefited community members. 500 word maximum

2.  The nominee’s current curriculum vitae/resume

3.  Two letters of support from individuals familiar with the nominee’s work who can provide evidence of how the nominee has contributed to community activism related to issues of social justice in education

4.  Contact information for nominee, including: Name, Address, Telephone, Email, organization affiliation and position (if applicable).

Self-nominations are accepted.

The individual receiving the award must meet the following criteria:

*   May not be a paid member of any community organization involved in the advocacy work;
*   May not have received any compensation (excluding grant funding) from community groups or members involved in the advocacy work
