Topic: The State of College Academic Support Service Programs
College access professionals for decades have advised their students to attend colleges where they’d receive caring and intrusive supports. For many students coming from the Philadelphia college access program region, success in college most times have a caring college academic support services program on campus. Over the past few years there has been cut-backs in funding for personnel and programs that provide these supports.
There has been a dramatic cuts and changes in the long time PA “Act 101” program. The federally funded Trio program Student Support Services (SSS) has also seen a decrease in funding. Colleges have needed to find other funding streams in order to fill funding gaps left by these programs or have had to cut the programming all together.
The meeting will have a panel of experts from higher education institutions in the Philadelphia area impacted by some of these program cuts. They will address how their programs are surviving, what are some the programmatic changes they are enduring and what can the college access community do to support these programs as they support our students. Guest panelist including Michael Stokes of the Temple University’s Russell Conwell Center, Angela McNeil of Arcadia University’s Gateway to Success Program, Corey Tucker of Community College of Philadelphia’s Support Services Program and Bob Miedel of LaSalle’s Academic Discovery Program.
There will be an opportunity for announcements for the good of the community. If you bring copies to disseminate, bring at least 50 copies.
