College Application Workshops for High School Seniors
Posted by on October 28, 2013
As you are well aware, most of our public schools do not have enough college counselors to help high school seniors complete their college applications. In an effort to help students now, PhillyGoes2College, an initiative of the Mayor’s Office of Education, in partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Education Fund and PHENND, are offering assistance to 12th graders as they work to complete their college application essays. This is a stop-gap effort, not a permanent solution, for helping students over the next two months.
Specifically, the Free Library will offer college application essay assistance in five locations on Saturdays between October 26th and December 14th (excluding Saturday, November 30th). The locations are:
Lucien E. Blackwell West Regional – 125 South 52nd Street
Joseph E. Coleman NW Regional – 68 West Chelten Avenue
Lillian Marrero Branch – 601 West Lehigh Avenue
McPherson Square Branch – 601 East Indiana Avenue
Greater Olney Branch – 5501 North 5th Street
Each Saturday from 10:00 am – 11:00 am, a college access professional will lead a general workshop on how to craft a good college essay and help the students think about appropriate topics. From 11:00 am – 2:00 pm students can either use the computers available at these locations to write their essays or get one-on-one assistance from volunteers who would be trained and placed at each site.
