Controller Examines Resident Spending Habits
City Controller Alan Butkovitz in his 2010 end-of-year economic report examined how individuals and households in our region are spending their money. Average household earnings in the five-county region are $76,612; in the City of Philadelphia, the average reaches $51,037. Across the region, households spend 74% of those earnings. Approximately 37% of household income is spent on housing, 11% is spent on food and 14% is spent on transportation. Residents of the southeastern Pennsylvania region reportedly spend $45.00 more per household on entertainment than their counterparts in New York City. Unfortunately, they also spend less on fruits and vegetables than the residents of the Boston and New York regions.
