Independence Mission Schools (IMS) is a non-profit network of schools re-envisioning Catholic education in and around the City of Philadelphia. Our schools have been beacons of hope for families from all faiths for generations. Located in neighborhoods that have historically been underserved by other schooling options, IMS schools offer a faith-centered and academically focused alternative for our families. With strong Catholic culture as a foundation, IMS is working to create a system of schools where academic rigor thrives, and where our schools play an important role in transforming our communities. Today, IMS serves almost 5,000 pre-K to 8th grade students across 15 schools where our team works tirelessly to prepare our students for world-class high schools.
Position Summary:
The Chief of Staff (COS) is responsible for ensuring the internal IMS central office is operating effectively and strategically toward its priorities, in support of the IMS mission. The role works closely with IMS’ president in setting the vision and direction of the organization and ensuring staff execute on that vision. In addition, the role works closely with the entire executive leadership team, inclusive of the Chief Academic Officer, Deputy Chief Academic Officer, Chief Development Officer, and Acting Chief Financial Officer, ensuring each functional area is aligned toward the most important priorities, that urgent issues are effectively assigned and handled, and that organization-wide culture and management is consistent.
Key Responsibilities:
Set Vision & Direction:
- Help facilitate the development of executive leadership’s strategic plan and monitor execution
- Facilitate executive leadership team meetings, staff meetings and other opportunities for cross-functional communication and culture building
- Support the President and executive leadership team as needed
Operational Management
- Manage Director of HR and ensure HR team is meeting its goals of supporting and centralizing HR compliance and management functions for schools
- Hire and manage a Director of IT who will oversee multiple IT vendors and support systems across all 15 schools
- Oversee enrollment and tuition functions – managing Director of Enrollment and Director of Tuition to achieve respective goals
- Oversee Office and Operations Manager
Special projects
- Manage and support cross-functional projects – annual budget process, strategic planning process, school leader operations onboarding/handbooks, etc.
- Coordinating and managing issues that arise of legal/contractual nature; urgent school incidents in absence of school principal managers, and ensuring they are managed by the appropriate internal or external personnel
Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree required; master degree or higher preferred
- A minimum of 10 years of professional experience with progressively increasing responsibility; senior management experience and a track record of success in a similar role are highly preferred
- An individual of strong Catholic faith who is possessed of a growth mindset, mission-driven, and committed to serving children of all faiths
- A self-starter, with experience in administration across multiple schools/ or in a network setting
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and teams at various stages of development
- Strong leadership and staff development skills including the ability to motivate staff at all levels, manage conflict, and grow teams
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and proven ability to network across diverse groups of stakeholders
- Strategic and data-driven problem-solver with a track record of setting and achieving ambitious goals
