America?s Foundation for Chess Seeking Teaching Assistants to be Chess Mentors

Description: America?s Foundation for Chess (AF4C) has developed a chess curriculum called First Move? that uses chess as a learning tool to increase higher level thinking skills in 2nd and 3rd graders. The Philadelphia Chapter of AF4C is seeking Chess Mentors (teaching assistants) who will work with students and their teachers to implement the First Move? chess curriculum.

Chess Mentors work in the schools, assisting in the classroom during the school day. This is not an after school program ? you will be assisting in the classroom teaching First Move? as a supplement to the existing curriculum. Duties could include teaching a lesson to the whole class, working with small groups of students, working one-on-one with a student or one-on-one with the classroom teacher. Strong organizational skills are a must as you will be on a schedule that takes you to 7-10 different schools. Chess Mentors will adhere to the regular school hours and calendar with a few evenings per year required for Family Chess Nights.

Basic Qualifications: The Philadelphia Chapter of AF4C seeks self-motivated individuals who care deeply about education, learning, and children. Candidates should be highly-organized, with excellent people skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, and a general knowledge and command of the game of chess. Undergraduate degree preferred. Position requires the minimum of a one year commitment. All candidates must successfully pass a criminal background check and child abuse clearance for consideration. A vehicle may be required for this position.

Salary & Benefits: Salary is in the high 20?s to low 30?s with benefits.
