Chess Coordinator, After School Activities Partnership

The Chess Coordinator serves our city’s students by working closely with the Director of Chess Programs in maintaining ASAP’s largest initiative – ASAP Chess – currently with a goal of 175 chess clubs citywide serving 2,500 students in schools, rec centers, and other meeting places.
Duties and responsibilities
Working closely with ASAP’s Director of Chess Programs active chess clubs through regular phone calls and emails, a weekly e-newsletter, and by providing chess materials, including chess clubs supported by the city of Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services.
Developing and managing relationships with coaches and students.
Recruiting new organizations and individuals into ASAP Chess by organizing and publicizing trainings for new chess club leaders.
Scheduling periodic site visits to observe clubs and provide additional support when needed.
Recruiting, placing, and managing high school chess mentors as they provide instruction and inspiration to students at existing middle and elementary clubs.
Recruiting and serving as the primary point of contact for ASAP’s afterschool and weekend events and tournaments for up to 250 students; managing tournament staff.
Recruiting and publicizing the Philly Girls Play Chess initiative; Assisting with the Philly Girls Play Chess Summer Camp.
Collecting, inputting, and organizing data about chess clubs, events, and student progress.
Collecting coach/parent/student testimonials through interviews.
Supporting ASAP’s other initiatives as needed and contribute to overall organizational goals through participation on ASAP’s staff committees.
Following developments within the School District of Philadelphia and establishing plans for reacting to said developments.

Qualifications include the following:
· Minimum Bachelor’s degree
· Experience with youth development, outreach and/or community organizing preferred
· Knowledge of chess strongly preferred, but not required
· Ability to multi-task and work in a team setting
· Detail-oriented approach
· Strong writing skills
· Outgoing personality
ASAP is a small organization, and the atmosphere is fast-paced and collaborative. We recruit colleagues who are excited about working as part of a team to improve the lives of the city’s youth. Applicants should be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook. The job requires a flexible schedule—some evenings and weekends are involved.
