Celebration of Writing & Literacy – Oct 12
Posted by University of Pennsylvania on October 8, 2019
I wanted to invite you to the upcoming Celebration of Writing & Literacy on Saturday, October 12th in Stiteler Hall. Numerous teachers from around the area will be presenting their curriculum ideas and research, with members of the Penn faculty moderating. To register for the event click here.
This year’s keynote speakers, Shani Robinson and Anna Simonton will discuss the testing scandal in the Atlanta public schools and the injustices of high-stakes testing in education today. Ms. Robinson is among the Atlanta Public Schools teachers convicted of racketeering in 2015 for allegedly helping to alter standardized test results. Her conviction raises questions about the use of high-stakes testing, which states wield as a bludgeon to defund schools and fire teachers, and about the use of the RICO statute, originally intended for organized crime, against those accused of academic dishonesty.
