Celebrating Five Years of The 1619 Project

Posted by Pulitzer Center on August 27, 2024

Sunday, August 18th was the fifth anniversary of The 1619 Project. It started with a New York Times Magazine special issue calling readers to recognize both the legacies of slavery in the United States and the often overlooked contributions of Black Americans in moving the country towards the ideals of its founding documents. The project has since expanded into a multimedia resource including a five-episode podcast, a six-part docuseries, a book anthology, a children’s book, and an upcoming illustrated edition.

The Pulitzer Center has been an education partner for The 1619 Project since its original publication. Our Engagement team members are proud to have connected thousands of educators and students with this creative and ambitious journalistic project over the last five years.

Our work with The 1619 Project is not complete. We look forward to sharing a full report highlighting the impact of our 1619 education programs and resources in the upcoming weeks. We continue to support our newest program partners, the 1619 Impact Grantees. And we’ll be hosting a webinar series this fall to document the sustained impact educators are seeing in their schools and communities from continued engagement with The 1619 Project resources and themes.

We invite you to join us in celebrating this critical work and continuing to engage in new and meaningful ways. The 1619 Project themes, which include democracy, citizenship, and justice, continue to be relevant and engaging for students, particularly as we come upon another historic presidential election in November.

We hope you’ll join the conversation. Share your own 1619 impact story with us, and subscribe to the 1619 Education newsletter to stay in the loop on the latest relevant resources and opportunities.

Learn: Introduce yourself to the 1619 Project and its themes in the virtual workshop.
