Can We Afford to Educate Philly Students: A Look at the School District’s FY19 Budget
At times it can seem like the pendulum on the School District’s finances can swing quite violently. Over the past nearly 10 years, we’ve seen massive school closures, teacher layoffs, state budget delays, sales tax increases, cigarette tax increases. But over the past few years, we’ve also begun to see meaningful investments, such as the addition of school counselors, movement on sorely-needed capital investments, the addition and expansion of innovative new schools, and the settlement of the teachers’ contract.
So, have our school finances turned the corner? Or, is this calm before the storm? Are our schools about to confront a new wave of financial challenges?
To guide us through these questions, we welcome Uri Monson, Chief Financial Officer for the School District of Philadelphia, to our Education First Compact Speaker Series.
Mr. Monson is responsible for navigating the challenges inherent in the administration of a nearly $3B budget for the Commonwealth’s largest school district. This requires managing the funds received from the City and the State, but also supporting the District in deploying those funds in a manner that best meets the competing financial demands of the Philadelphia School District budget.
Last year, attendees at the Ed Compact gave Mr. Monson high marks for his ability to communicate the complexities of our School District finances in a simple and straightforward manner. So, if you’ve ever wondered what causes the school budget pendulum to swing and, more importantly, wondered how we might help support stable, reliable, school funding, register for this June’s Education First Compact.
