Call for Workshop Proposals

Real Food Challenge seeks proposals for workshops for the Northeast Food and Justice Summit to be held at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts February 25-27, 2011.  The workshops will be held on Saturday, February 26. Workshops must be submitted by January 7, 2011 to be considered.

The Summit strives to support learning that is participatory, experiential, rooted in dialogue, and draws on the experience of all participants to address issues around food systems, food justice, student organizing, and/or their intersections with the broader sustainability and social justice movements. The mission of the summit is to unite over 600 food activists–from high school and college students, to young farmers, chefs, and food service leaders from the Northeast in this cause.

Workshop Details

·   Length: Each workshop will be 1hour and15 minutes long. Facilitators are encouraged to limit presentation time to be able to leave space for discussion.

·     Size: The average size of the workshop will be approximately 20 participants in order to create an environment in favor of open dialogue. The actual number of people who attend, however, may range anywhere from 10 to 50 or more people–please plan for this range of possibilities.

·    Format: Facilitators should avoid depending solely on PowerPoint presentations and lecture style workshops. Workshops should be highly interactive.

·    Audience:  Both high school and college students will be attending this summit. Please be cognizant of this range in age group. The proposal form will ask that you specify which age group(s) your workshop is targeted to. This can be high school, college or both.

Selection Criteria
Proposals will be considered based on the following criteria being fully met.

·     Proof of an interactive learning environment or “popular education” for facilitation for the workshop proposal. Popular education encourages a high level of variety and interaction in all learning environments.

·    Completion of the Workshop Proposal Form.

·     Clear workshop topic and alignment with summit goals. Please review the Workshop Proposal Form  to see a detailed description of themes and examples of potential topics.

Honoraria for Presenters

All registration fees will be waived for summit workshop facilitators, however all presenters must register through the Northeast Food and Justice summit website http://www.realfoodchallenge.org/nefoodjustice2011.  If you forsee financial limitations for housing and transportation please contact foodandjustice11@gmail.com
