CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS, WRITINGS & INTERVIEWS
TENTATIVE FIRST DEADLINE: August 2004

Freedom Trainers, a group of community organizers and anti-oppression trainers around the country, is collecting submissions from individuals and organizations on the topic of community organizing strategies. We are aiming to compile these written submissions along with interviews and visual work in a book and CD/DVD format.

We are looking to document the importance of community organizing in our collective work and want to hear strategies from communities and individuals around the country. We intend to emphasize narratives from those of us who have been traditionally silenced, such as people of color, poor folks, the LGBTQ community and differently-abled organizers, mothers and youth.

It is our hope to have a collection of writings and pieces that are accessible to organizers around the country, so that we can learn from each other’s specific successes and struggles. We hope that this will become a useful applied organizing tool that we can collectively use in our larger organizing communities.

We would like to hear, for example, what strategies you have been using as to outreach to different communities, types of effective direct actions you have practiced, coalition work with local groups, the political platform of your group, etc. Our goal is to continue dialogues with individuals and organizations doing amazing work all over.

As organizers ourselves we recognize that many community organizers have a hard time finding free time, let alone time to write about our work. For those of us in the field who want to contribute but cannot put time into writing a narrative, we have come up with different options such as interviews and taking recorded media.

Freedom Trainers is a group of trainers around the country offering trainings on organizational change and development with a focus on community organizing and growth. For more information on the Freedom Trainers, please visit us online at http://www.freedomtrainers.org/
