Call for Submissions: Service-Learning in Communication

SERVICE LEARNING IN COMMUNICATION ? CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Announcing a call for submissions for an edited book designed to provide communication instructors with a detailed template of successful service learning assignments. Manuscripts can focus on assignments which have been used in a variety of communication courses ? some courses may include introductory/hybrid course, interpersonal, public speaking, organizational, health, rhetoric, research methods, persuasion, interviewing, campaigns, and group communication. The project will be published by Allyn & Bacon and focus on assisting both instructors who are new to service learning as well as those who would like to find innovative assignment ideas. Deadline for manuscripts is September 1, 2003.

All submissions should explicate a service-learning assignment along with forms and exercises for reflection and evaluation that have been course tested. Each submission should conform to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition, 2001).

Submissions should include these components:
(1) Title; (2) Learning objectives for the assignment or course; (3) The course or courses in which the assignment has been used; (4) Summary of the context in which the service-learning takes place; (5)Identify the community agents (individuals, organizations and/or institutions) and the benefit they received; (6) Clear ?blueprint? on how to implement the assignment including a step by step explanation of the activity, needed preparation, and instructional methods used in completing the assignment; (7) Identify the assessment of student reflection and learning outcomes including the forms used; (8) Identify limitations of the assignment and any problems encountered; (9)Identify 10-15 references and resources; (10) Include the course syllabus in which the assignment was incorporated.

Manuscripts will not be returned to the author(s). The decision not to publish is final.

Submissions must be accompanied by a title page that includes author(s) name and professional title, title of activity/assignment, complete mailing address, phone number, fax number, e-mail address, and history of the submission. Manuscripts should be submitted on a 3.5″ IBM-compatible disk formatted for Word for Windows 2000 or WordPerfect for Windows (6.0 or higher) along with three (3) hard copies of the manuscript to:
