2ND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
TEACHER EDUCATION AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
San Francisco Airport Marriott Hotel, California, U.S.A.
23-25 July 2004

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW: Across the United States and around the world, teacher educators face many challenges. Especially troublesome are the economic, social, and political contexts that make difficult our attempts to address differences and oppressions in schools and society. Yet, in the face of these challenges,
teacher educators are continuing to produce new and innovative theories, practices, and coalitions. At stake: What does it mean to prepare teachers to teach toward social justice? The 2nd Annual International Conference on Teacher Education and Social Justice will offer rare opportunities to exchange ideas, develop resources, build networks, and explore possibilities for new directions in teacher preparation with a diverse group of educators who share commitments and priorities. Hands-on workshops, panel discussions, informal gatherings, and resource showcases will fill the schedule.

THEMES: This year’s conference will highlight four themes: ~ Grassroots Organizing of Teacher Educators ~ Recruitment and Retention of Diverse Populations among Teachers and Teacher Educators ~ Preparing Educators to Address Homophobia and Heterosexism in Schools ~ Anti-Oppressive Perspectives on Teacher-Education Policy, Curriculum, or Reform

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Proposals are solicited on all topics regarding teacher education and social justice, but especially encouraged are proposals on any of the four featured themes listed above. Two types of proposals are solicited: workshop and paper presentation. Descriptions of the featured themes, workshop and paper sessions, and procedures to submit a proposal are online (http://antioppressiveeducation.org/2004conference.html). Deadline for proposals: 20 February 2004.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP ON PUBLISHING FOR EMERGING SCHOLARS OF COLOR: Emerging scholars of color (graduate students and recent Ph.D. graduates) doing work in the field of teacher education and social justice are invited to register for this three-hour workshop on publishing books and journal articles. The workshop will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, July 22nd, and is free with conference pre-registration.

SPECIAL CAUCUS ON APTEC: In addition to workshops and paper presentations, the conference will schedule ample time and opportunities for members of the Alliance for Progressive Teacher Education in California (APTEC) to convene. More information on APTEC is available online (http://antioppressiveeducation.org/aptec.html).

FOR MORE INFORMATION: The conference is being organized by the Center for Anti-Oppressive Education (CAOE). More information on the conference and CAOE is available online (http://antioppressiveeducation.org).
