Call for Proposals: Response to Community Crisis: Lessons from Recent Hurricanes

Posted by on November 11, 2005

The Tougaloo College Center for Civic Engagement & Social Responsibility will be hosting a symposium on “Response to Community Crisis: Lessons from Recent Hurricanes.” The symposium will take place June 6-9, 2006, at the Marriott Jackson Hotel in Jackson, Mississippi. This event is co-sponsored by the Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, Campus Compact, the United Negro College Fund Special Programs, and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Faculty Development Network.

The overall goal of the symposium is to strengthen the ability of the academic community to understand and respond to the needs of citizens during times of crisis. The organizers are seeking proposals that relate to service-learning, civic engagement, and other community-related initiatives relevant to the theme of this conference. This could be projects that you, yourself, have undertaken, strategies that you have designed, or reflections on the lessons we should be learning from Hurricane Katrina and other recent hurricanes and their aftermath.

Please submit electronically a one-page proposal, indicate the type of presentation you plan on giving, and include a brief bio with some focus on your community outreach. Please submit the proposal to network@hbcufdn.org. Proposals should be submitted by December 1, 2005. You will hear back regarding the status of your proposal by January 15, 2006.

The organizers also need feedback (to network@hbcufdn.org) from all people who plan on attending this symposium so that they can determine the number of sleeping rooms to reserve with the Marriott. The hotel room rate will be $109. The registration fee for attending the symposium will be $175, and this will include some meals.
