The Association of American Colleges and Universities is pleased to announce the call for proposals for “Global Citizenship for Campus, Community, and Careers: Crossing Borders and Boundaries.” The deadline for proposals is Wednesday, April 24, 2019.

Global Citizenship for Campus, Community, and Careers will assert the importance of global learning to prepare students for life, work, and citizenship in their own neighborhoods, communities, and beyond. In our current political and social context, as rhetoric around global engagement continues to trend toward the divisive, the transformative power of global learning is affirmed by students, educators, community stakeholders, and employers. Because today’s and tomorrow’s students will cross boundaries and borders in all aspects of their lives, higher education must prepare students for ethical global citizenship. To do so, we must move beyond cursory nods and talking points to a model that fully integrates global learning into the educational experiences of all students—regardless of race, class, gender, immigration status, or socio-economic status—at all institutional types.

AAC&U invites proposals on the following conference themes:

Strategic Planning for Global Learning
ideas; institutional structures; strategies for inclusive global learning; implementation plans

Global Learning Experiences
interdisciplinary; developing professional and civic skills; collaboration; real-world applications

Global Learning in Today’s Global Context
local, regional, national, and international political contexts for global learning; allaying antiglobal rhetoric; integrating global learning into local and global communities; power dynamics; relationships; international perspectives and differences

Affirming Undocumented, Immigrant, and International Students
fostering belonging; visibility; creating programs to ensure students’ full participation, agency, and engagement with their institutions

Powerful Pedagogies
assignment and course design; curricular and cocurricular integration; experiential learning; integrating civic, intercultural, and global skills; connections to social justice; professional development

Equitable Access
inclusion across cultural, ethnic, gender, racial, and socioeconomic lines; access for adult learners and students with disabilities; innovative models and programs; institutional support programs

High-Impact Practices
balancing and leveraging community-based high-impact practices for student learning and success; connecting high-impact practices; engaged learning

AAC&U invites proposals for sessions to explore practical and theoretical approaches to global learning at the course, departmental, and institutional levels and examine ways to make global learning experiences more inclusive through presentations on assignment design, assessment, learning outcomes, program development, and campus collaborations, with a focus on supporting and guiding students as they move through college and into their career paths. Models from institutions of all types will also highlight a range of practices for ethical engagement with communities and organizations (including nonprofits, corporations, healthcare facilities, and educational centers) in experiential learning, both locally and globally, to prepare students for meaningful interactions in their emerging professions, disciplines, and life as community members.
