Call for Proposals: Experiential Learning in Education Abroad

Posted by on January 21, 2005

Council on International Educational Exchange is now accepting session proposals for the 2005 CIEE Annual Conference, “Taking Part: Experiential Learning in Education Abroad,” which will take place in New Orleans, Louisiana, November 16-19, 2005. Proposals must be received at CIEE by February 1, 2005.

Conference sessions will discuss integrating experiential learning into study abroad to make the most of an international opportunity. Integration is integral to the identity of New Orleans, where African, French, and Spanish influences have coalesced to create the multi-hued culture of today’s Louisiana. Take part in that culture by immersing yourself in the city’s jazz music, patois lingo, and Cajun cooking.

The 2005 Conference seeks to promote integration of another sort in international programming by encouraging students to take an active role in their education through service-learning and other opportunities abroad.

Specific emphasis will be given to such issues as:
– Theory and Philosophy of Experiential Learning
– Service-Learning and Civic Engagement
– Integrating Coursework and Practical Training
– Training and Preparation for Experiential Programs
– Managing and Supervising Student Placements
– Evaluating and Quantifying Experiences
– How to Guide and Facilitate Reflection
– Advising for Non-Credit Programs: Work, Teach, Volunteer
– Legal & Liability Issues

Region-specific study abroad destinations, scholarship and grant opportunities, and relevant developments in Washington, DC will also be covered.

Sessions should focus on concepts, theories, issues, problems, solutions, or controversies – not on case studies or descriptions of programs at a single institution. The standard format is a presentation given by two to four speakers, with 15 minutes of questions/audience discussion. Alternative formats, such as panel discussions, breakout/working groups, debates, and poster sessions are warmly welcomed. Sessions are 75 minutes long.

All proposals should include:
– Session Title
– Session Description (200-400 words)
– Chair and Presenter Names and Affiliations
– Session Format and Audio-Visual Requirements
– Proposer’s Name, Institution, Address, Telephone, Fax, and Email

Please email proposals to conference2005@ciee.org no later than February 1, 2005 for consideration.
