Call for Proposals: Democracy Begins at Home: The Place-Based Imperative of Community Engagement – Nov 15

Posted by North Carolina Campus Engagement on November 12, 2024

North Carolina Campus Engagement’s 2025 Pathways to Achieving Civic Engagement (PACE) Conference will be held February 12, 2025 at the Conference Center at Guilford Technical Community College. Now in its 26th year, the conference is for faculty, administrators, researchers, community partners, and graduate students who want to gain skills, knowledge and best practice models for a spectrum of community and civic engagement pedagogies and practices. Last year we welcomed 220 participants representing 29 institutions in five states.

This year’s theme calls higher education institutions back to their anchor and place-based mission. It imagines what would happen if higher education invested fully in our community and civic mission to address wicked social problems, improve civic health, enhance public discourse, and strengthen democracy locally.

Sessions are 60 minutes with three formats: standard, community conversations, and mini-sessions. Standard sessions are invited in four tracks: capacity-building, pedagogy, research & theory, and community partnership development & sustainability. Proposals are sought for sessions that will inform or advance the research and practice of community and civic engagement through research findings, innovative program design and partnership models, proven community/institutional impacts, effective curriculum or co-curricular models, institutional capacity building and institutionalization, or successful community engagement practices.

The 2025 special track is Facilitating Civic and Democratic Engagement. We are seeking presentations on efforts to integrate democratic engagement into campus culture. This may involve efforts to promote civil discourse and dialogue, information literacy, political discussions, open inquiry, election mobilization, public problem-solving, or innovative models for strengthening democracy.

Proposal deadline: November 15, 2024

Call for proposals.
