2023 Gulf-South Summit: Serving Our Surroundings: Creating and Sustaining Authentic Community Engagement
April 12-14, 2023
The University of Georgia – Athens, GA

This year’s Gulf-South Summit welcomes presentation submissions that showcase and deepen our understanding of how engagement best practices are developed and implemented in our communities. Presentations might include descriptions of new and established service-learning courses and partnerships and the identified needs they respond to, as well as ways in which these initiatives demonstrate their impact on communities and students, and how they enhance our understanding of engagement, reciprocity, service, and equity.

Guiding questions may include the following: How do we initiate, sustain, and grow community engagement in challenging times? In what ways should our institutions and courses determine and respond to community-identified needs, and how can we assess our impact? How do our efforts reflect authenticity, relationships, reciprocity, and partnership?

Effective presentations should go beyond the “what” (i.e., purely descriptive), and include a grounding in context and practice (“so what?”) as well as lessons learned and recommendations for future practice or replication by others (“now what?”).
