2011 Extra Learning Opportunities Conference:
Continuing the Legacy, Shaping the Future

Pennsylvania Department of Education in partnership with the Center for Schools and Communities provides this two-day conference at the Hilton Harrisburg, Harrisburg, PA on March 9-10, 2011.

Target Audience
This conference is designed to provide quality professional development opportunities for school administrators, afterschool providers, student support personnel, teachers, and other community partners who are working with students in out-of-school time settings.

Session Length
Workshop presentations will be 90 minutes in length.

Presentation Topics
•    Quality Programming
Workshops in this category will showcase best practices for out-of-school time and focus on the importance of including academics while making learning active, fun and hands-on. Modules within this category will include teaching individuals how to plan activities to meet program objectives so learning is deliberate and produces desired outcomes.

•    Community and Family Involvement
This category will include workshops on the magnitude of a collaborative connection with families and community organizations. Workshops within this category will explore the benefits of these contacts and the methods and techniques for encouraging and building these relationships.

•    Research, Evaluation and Knowledge Base
Life-long learning is critical to individuals’ professional career and personal growth.  This group of workshops will focus on the latest research advancing out-of-school time practices and how organizations can use research information as well as their own data collection and evaluation methods to improve the services they are providing in out-of-school time.

•    Financing
Sustainability is a critical part of all organizational planning. Workshops within this category will focus on a variety of resources that should be explored and how an organization’s advisory board is an essential part of long term planning.

•    Staffing and Training
Workshops within this category will include the review of effective training areas for out-of-school time providers and how administration can assist employees in the development of a training plan to enhance their skills and support the employee learning process.

•    Management and Administration
Many managers and administration staff enter those positions without training or experience in supervising staff or managing projects. These workshops will focus on the role of administration in creating a structure for supporting the work of those under your direction and how to strengthen policies to support effective work practices.

All workshops are noncommercial and not promotional opportunities.  Presenter(s) are not permitted to solicit or promote any business during the workshop session.

All applicants will be advised electronically regarding the status of their presentation proposal no later than December 17, 2010.
