Call for Presenters: Afterschool Summer Institute

Posted by on April 29, 2005

The U.S. Department of Education and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, in conjunction with the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning at SEDL, is pleased to announce that the 21st Century Community Learning Center 2005 Afterschool Summer Institute will be held in Chicago, IL, July 14-15, 2005. This year we are requesting presentation proposals. There is only one Summer Institute scheduled this year. To register for the Summer Institute, please visit the following website: http://www.synergyentinc.com/21stcentury/

The National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning is again assisting the Department of Education in planning this year’s institute. The theme for the Summer Institute is “Building Relationships that Engage Students and Meet Their Needs.” We invite you and others in your program/organization to submit a proposal for one of the concurrent sessions. The Institute will feature programs that provide high-quality learning opportunities in the content areas, complemented by activities that promote social, physical, and emotional development in children and youth. We are organizing the Institute according to the following five strands:
? Integrating Equity and Access to Serve Students
? Building Relationships for Positive Social, Physical, and Emotional Development in Children
? Building Relationsips to Engage the Family, School, and Community
? Engaging Students in Effective Learning in the Content Areas
? How to Evaluate After-school Programs

We consider research, staff training, evaluation, and sustainability as cross-cutting issues within the various strands and recommend that when proposing a presentation, you address one or more of the cross-cutting issues. The focus of these presentations should be to help programs design and implement exciting and engaging activities that will promote regular participation and student development. You may propose a 60- or 75-minute session. You may also propose to showcase your programs in the exhibit area throughout the two-day Institute. Those selected to display will be asked to stand by their exhibit during the first day’s reception (usually 6:00-8:00 pm) to answer questions from participants.

Specific information on submitting a proposal is contained is the attached document. To submit a proposal, complete the form contained in this attachment and email the completed application as an attachment to: astockto@sedl.org or fax your submission to Artie Stockton at 512-476-2286 by May 6, 2005. We will be in touch with you after we have reviewed the proposals and selected those for presentations at the Summer Institute.

We look forward to receiving your proposals.
