Place-based Education: Providing Learning Experiences That Connect Students to Their World
Volume 16, No. 2

CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS

Place-based education enables students to become contributing members of their community through informed decision-making and actions that lead to community improvement. Why should students wait until they are adults to learn how to become involved in their communities? With so many students questioning, “Why are we learning this?” we have a response through place-based education: because it truly matters to you and to your community.

We invite teachers, students, environmental educators, and others to share stories about programs that promote place-based education, community-based learning or service learning that requires student engagement in community action.

What is place-based education? How have you implemented curriculum that is considered place-based education? We are looking for stories from the classroom to help other educators come to a deeper understanding of place-based education from a curriculum and pedagogical perspective.

What are some challenges and benefits of studying and responding to issues in your community? Implementing change is never easy. However, hearing from others who have gone through the experience helps avoid some pitfalls, while easing the path to successful implementation.

With the current interest in student achievement, is there evidence that links place-based or service learning with student learning? How does an educator provide data to their administration to support the implementation or continuation of place-based education?

How might place-based or community-based education support diverse perspectives, including those from non-dominant groups? How would the voices of underrepresented groups be part of the decision-making and implementation processes in the community?

DEADLINE: September 30, 2005. We look forward to hearing from you!
