Call for Artists:
Asian Arts Initiative’s 2015-2016 Youth Arts Workshop
Application Submission Deadline: August 21, 2015
Overview:
Asian Arts Initiative is seeking experienced visual arts teaching artists to join our Youth Arts Workshop (YAW). Teaching artists will work with approximately 20 youth in grades 6, 7, and 8 at our home location in Chinatown North – 1219 Vine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107. The program will operate Monday through Friday from 3
p.m. to 6 p.m. from September 14th through June 17th. Lead teaching artist will be asked to create a curriculum and facilitate workshops for the Young Community Curators program.
Project Description:
From September 2015 through June 2016, Young Community Curators will be a residency project for youth who will learn to imagine, design, and create a community-based exhibition that explores their definitions of “culture”, “ethnicity”, “race”, and “stereotype” to better examine their communities. Meeting regularly, five days a week, youth will be able to convey ideas and feelings about race and identity so that they can strengthen their ability to articulate their own viewpoints to others. They will learn curatorial practice and generate their own original work to be displayed alongside practicing professional artists. Students will experience a variety of exhibitions and collections within Philadelphia (from traditional to the avant-garde), meet with local curators and artists, discover methods to analyze, interpret and discuss art, and learn both the theoretical concepts and practical applications involved in visualizing, creating and designing an exhibition.
Residency Requirements:
• Fulfilling a total of up to 20 hours per week, which includes 15 hours of teaching and 5 hours of workshop preparation and curriculum development
• Previous teaching experience working with urban youth
• A state and federal criminal record check and PA Child Abuse Clearance must be provided within 30 days of hire
To apply, submit the following documents:
1. Letter of interest, 2 page maximum describing:
• Name, phone, e-mail, and mailing address of individual or lead artist
• Your work and development as an artist
• Why do you want to be a teaching artist in the program?
