The US/Canada Citizens’ Summit for Sustainable Development seeks applications from individuals and organizations interested in contributing to a high-level conversation about the future of sustainability in the United States and Canada, in the lead-up to the forthcoming 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (aka Rio+20 Conference).

The Summit will take place on March 24 & 25th at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies in New Haven, Connecticut and will bring together over 150 high-level and emerging leaders from a variety of fields (academia, business, civil society, government, and politics) to generate new knowledge, policy, and action for sustainability in the United States and Canada. To maximize the contributions of participants, the Summit will feature a combination of interactive workshops, brainstorming sessions, and knowledge sharing exercises conducted in small break-out groups. A draft programme can be viewed here.

The Summit will result in a number of valuable outcomes for the future of sustainability in the United State and Canada, including the release of a consensus declaration on key take-aways, white papers on specific sub-topics, and the launch of innovative initiatives and partnerships. In addition, the Summit also aims to enhance our region’s contribution to the Rio+20 Conference and will feature a high-level event on the forthcoming report of the United Nations Global Panel on Sustainability, involve experts, advocates, and negotiators involved in the Rio+20 process, and provide an opportunity to join a US/Canada civil society caucus that is being formed for the Rio+20 conference.

If you are interested in participating in these two days of dialogue and partnership-building, please apply using this form by March 1st, 2012. Please note that applications will be considered on an on-going basis and that spaces at the Summit are limited. Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

While the Summit cannot funding to cover travel costs to New Haven, participants will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and refreshments for two days, and possible accommodations options include  limited complimentary private accommodation with a Yale student during the Summit.
