COMPENSATION: $40,000

PURPOSE AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (BCGP) is hiring a program manager to coordinate Cadence Youth Cycling (CYC) a youth program that fosters healthy habits, independence, and leadership in Philadelphia youth through the sport of cycling. BCGP is in its third year of running CYC, formerly known as Cadence Cycling Foundation. CYC runs road cycling teams at Title One high schools as well as Neighborhood Bike Works from March to June impacting approximately 100 students across 6-8 sites. Athletes who demonstrate leadership, responsibility and sportsmanship have the opportunity to join the CYC All Star Leadership Team, which runs
throughout the year. All Star Team members that qualify can also join the CYC race team and triathlon teams, which enter competitive races across the Philadelphia region between June and August. Additionally, All Star athletes have leadership opportunities including a six-week leadership development course, CYC Leadership Squad, the Youth Advisory Committee, as well as service and advocacy projects. All- Stars are active in off season practices and events from September through February. The program manager oversees all programmatic aspects of CYC and assists our development team with CYC related sponsorships and events when needed.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
CYC Program Manager…
• Reports to the Deputy Director, Megan Rosenbach.
• Works out of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia office as well as on site where programs operate (West, Northwest, and North Philly as well as event sites across the region).
• Works outdoors and on weekends and evenings as needed, especially from March – August.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Coaching Management
• Recruit and hire qualified head, assistant and master coaches.
• Design and conduct coach trainings / Revise and update coaching manuals.
• Lead bi-weekly coaches meetings throughout season and serve as primary contact for coaches.
• Coordinate with coaches regarding athletes, bicycle maintenance and equipment updates.
2. Site and Team Management
• Serve as main contact for site supervisors, school administrators, and parents.
• Prepare practice schedules and locations at least two months in advance of the season start.
• Recruit full teams at each site before the start of spring season.
• Assure sites have appropriate materials in advance of season start.
• Close down sites at the end of each season and account for all CYC inventory.
• Manage bike inventory process, including storage and ordering new bikes.
• Attend 2 or more practices per week from March through August, to ensure quality control.
• Collect and analyze data including attendance, surveys, and fitness metrics.
• Plan four spring events for team sites and coordinate summer All-star participation in special events.
3. Program Development
• Sustain and build effective partnerships at team sites, and with the local cycling community.
• Build new relationships to establish new program sites in key neighborhoods.
• Act as a reliable resource and communicator with all program related partners.
• Develop new strategies for alumni and parent engagement.
• Assist the Development team with donor cultivation, sponsorship and events.
• Deliver presentations and annual report about the CYC program to a variety of audiences.
• Regular Salesforce database and Google Drive maintenance.
5. Youth Leadership Development
• Continue to grow the CYC Leadership Ladder, including Youth Advisory Committee, CYC leadership Squad, All-Star Team and related youth development opportunities.
• Recruit Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) members each year and lead monthly meetings to elevate youth voice in CYC programming and coach youth in a variety of leadership strategies. Coordinate annual YAC trips to Washington DC and the Youth Bike Summit.
• Curate and refine the CYC Leadership Squad, a six-week summer program for All Star athletes that focuses on leadership development, project management and civic engagement.
• Generate a variety of opportunities for All Star athletes to grow their leadership potential including service learning, public speaking and advocacy.
QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS
There are many moving parts to Cadence Youth Cycling including coordination with sites, managing a team of coaches, inventory management, volunteer recruitment, communicating with parents, raising money for the program, and most importantly, supporting the youth athletes. The ideal candidate for the Cadence Youth Cycling Program Manager role is someone who has a passion for and experience with both bicycle racing and investing in youth. Candidates should also be confident that their skillsets and talents are a match for all of the following categories that are essential to Cadence Youth Cycling’s success:
• ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS: The new Program Manager will have superior organization and
communication skills, including attention to detail and prompt email and phone response time.
Flexibility and resourcefulness during unexpected challenges are both keys to success.
• TEAM / GROUP MANAGEMENT: Candidates must also have experience managing others as well as know when to self-manage or ask for assistance. The Program Manager is the only full time staff for CYC and the candidate must be comfortable working and making decisions independently and know when and how to delegate tasks to BCGP support staff, including the Directors. Leading and organizing efficient and effective CYC team meetings as well as coaches trainings is core to the program manger’s success.
The program manager will also set the tone for interacting with youth, including how coaches manage and hold youth accountable and how youth voice is incorporated into decisions; therefore a candidate with classroom / group management skills is essential.
• STRATEGIC VISION: Beyond the day-to-day operations, we are looking for a person who can set a vision for CYC’s future and help develop the means to make that vision a reality. This person will help figure out the future of Cadence Youth Cycling during the BCGP’s strategic plan process. The Program Manager will be the public face of Cadence Youth Cycling and therefore must demonstrate ease and enthusiasm while presenting to groups and individuals.
